The fallout of the definitive exclusion of former First Lady Sandra Torres and the centre-left Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) – Guatemala’s largest party - from the 11 September presidential race has still to become clear. While yet to be confirmed as the official UNE strategy, calls by Torres for her supporters to vote blank in the presidential election (and vote positively only in the concurrent legislative and municipal polls), suggest the ruling party will not endorse any of the remaining 10 presidential candidates. Bar Rigoberta Menchú, the indigenous leader and Nobel peace prize laureate who stands little chance, this leaves the electorate with an array of candidates aligned to varying degrees with the Right.
